Holiday Inn Express, Cannery Row: I stayed here last year. It is about a one mile walk from the Holiday Inn to the conference venue, which was invigorating at eight in the morning and irksome at midnight (or later...). It's a standard hotel, and I had no complaints. The chief virtue of the place is the free wifi. The rates on the Holiday Inn page are higher than I remember paying last year when I booked through Expedia or Travelocity. - SteveLawson -- I've never been to Monterey. The morning walk sounds fine, but are threre cabs available at night? (Arlene)

Best Western Monterey Beach Resort Possibly the best-kept secret of IL-ers who need their quiet time. This is a lovely 2 1/2 mile walk up the Recreation Trail from the Conference Center. Make reservations thru Expedia.com or other booking agent and the rates are cheaper than the conference hotels. Besides, you're on the ocean!

Has anyone ever stayed at the Merritt House Inn which is supposedly near the conference center? Both conference hotels were sold out for the night of October 23, so I'm moving to the inn for a couple of nights. Hope it's as nice as it looks. Merritt House Inn
